Tall clock
89 x 17 x 9.25 in.
Engraved on face of dial: "N. DOMINY,--17/90, E. HAMPTON,--" "O TRIFLE NOT/TILL BEAT:/DEATH DON'T RETREAT"
The case of this cock is related in appearance to some of the best examples of Dominy's work between 1780 and 1790. Similar to the Dominy family's treatment of other furniture made of cherry, the wood has been stained to produce a finish resembling walnut or mahogany. The original keyhole escutcheons and brass finials are unusal and probably reflect the preferences of the cutomer. The only clock listed in the Dominy accounts for 1790, the date which appears on the dial, was made for Aaron Isaacs, an East Hampton merhcant. The cost of the clock was £20, the same amount Dominy charged Thomas Baker for a similar eight-day strike and repeater clock made in 1787 and recorded in the accounts in 1788. It is possible, however, that this example is the clock Nathaniel Dominy IV made for John Gardiner, entered in Dominy's accounts April 5, 1791.
