The design of this chair relates to plate XII in the 1762 edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director. It is  one of a set of six chairs owned by the Preservation Long Island. Judging from the Roman numerals stamped on each chair frame and seat, the original set probably consisted of twelve chairs.
