Settee
Elizabeth Woodhull Smith (1762–1839), the daughter of General Nathaniel Woodhull (1722–1776) and Ruth Floyd (1731–1805) and the wife of John Smith (1752–1816), was the original owner of this sofa. It is a classic example of the best New York furniture design of the first decade of the the ninteenth century. The swags of drapery and tied sheaves of wheat carved on the upper back rail appear on several related sofas.
