On the Ways, Northport
Watercolor and gouache on beige paper depicting shipbuilding scene in Northport Harbor. Foreground shows drifted snowbanks and horsedrawn sleigh traveling from left to right, hull and ribs of partially constructed boat behind with scattered timber and sawhorse nearby, gears to far right possibly meant to power a towline attached to boats moving in and out of the slipway. Two boats berthed in midground, one smaller iron-hulled ship with small steam engine and a larger single-masted ship behind with lowered sails; small one-story building to far right with chimney; snow piled all around. Background shows Northport Harbor, possibly frozen over; two-masted ship docked to left side; outline of hills beyond on the far left, sky painted blue with white, grey, and pink highlights in the cloud cover.
